What does my child need for Art class?

Art class requirements are different for each of the three grade categories.  Typically, Montessori students do not need to bring anything for Art class - smocks are provided.  Kindergarten through Grade 5 receive a materials list at the beginning of each school year which includes items such as a smock, #2 pencils, an eraser, white glue, and a glue stick.  Middle school students are often required to bring with them a notebook with looseleaf paper.

How often does my child see you for Art?

More often than not, classes are split into two groups and each group attends one 40-45 minute art class each week. In the case of smaller classes, they may attend class as one group once a week.  Occasionally, middle school classes will attend in split groups twice a week depending on the needs of other academic areas such as math or science.

What is Arts Night?

Arts Night is an annual event which brings the entire school together to celebrate the arts in the three forms they are taught and enjoyed at Stella Niagara:  visual arts, music, and drama.  Scheduled in the early spring, students perform music arrangements, act out dramatic performances, and transform the upstairs hall into a gallery with a display of original artworks.

How do you grade my child's artwork?

Creativity Assessment is an ongoing field of study in universities across the country - even the world.  My approach to grading student artworks is done by way of rubrics.  The criteria of these are concrete, clear-cut, easy to demonstrate parts of the process or movement being studied, with a built-in oral explanation portion which occurs while each student is working.  The students are kept in the loop of how their work is answering to the rubrics so as to allow them to reflect and self-assess the effectiveness of their work.
